Dawson ISD, like many schools across the nation, has been mandated
by the federal government to provide Internet filtering, monitoring,
and blocking technology measures for Internet content. The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA)
requires schools and libraries that receive federal funds for supporting
Internet access to provide technology protection measures against
pornographic, adult sexually explicit content, and other lewd, obscene
graphical content. The visual depiction of the adult-oriented content
must be filtered and blocked. The technology protection measure
helps to facilitate a safe online learning environment for students.
Dawson ISD has implemented its technology
protection measures on several fronts:
- Web filtering, monitoring, and blocking
- Electronic messaging filtering, monitoring,
and blocking
- Virus detection and prevention
- Firewall security, intrusion detection,
and packet monitoring
- Access control list and responsible use
policies
- Training and learning services for employees
and students
- Executive sponsorship and administrative
enforcement
While the DISD has taken a proactive,
flexible, and comprehensive approach to online safety and security,
there is no technology protection measure that can guarantee 99.999%
assurance. We conduct periodic test and evaluation of our implementation
to make adjustments and improvements in online safety for students
and employees.
